WHAT TO WEAR ON SCHOOL PICTURE DAY

AIM FOR CLEAN & CLASSIC
Solid colors are always your safest and loveliest choice. They keep the focus exactly where it belongs: on your child’s face and sweet expressions, minus visual distractions. Solid tones create a clean, classic look that age beautifully.
Try to avoid loud or neon colors, as they can cast unnatural tones onto the skin and pull attention away from your child’s features. This is important: no neon, unless you want a little glow reflecting right back onto their face. Keeping it simple ensures a timeless portrait you’ll love for years.
COMFORT IS KING!
Because these portraits are shoulder-up, what your child wears on top really matters. The goal is something that feels comfortable and familiar, when kids feel good in what they’re wearing, it shows in their expressions. Relaxed and confident always photographs best.
Look for classic necklines or simple collars that naturally frame their face without feeling fussy. Soft textures are great, too: think cozy knits, brushed cotton, or smooth fabrics that add interest without stealing the spotlight. And most importantly, make sure the fit feels just right. Not too tight, not too oversized, just comfortable enough that they can forget about it and simply be themselves.
SAY NO TO DISTRACTING ACCESSORIES
While big bows and cute hats can be adorable in everyday life, they can easily take attention away from what matters most in a portrait: your child’s face. Large pieces can create shadows, cover features, or simply become the focal point of the image. For school portraits, less really is more. If you choose hair accessories, keep them simple and subtle.
HAIR
A little prep goes a long way. Make sure your child’s hair is brushed and styled neatly, keeping it out of their eyes so we can see their full expression. Clear eyes and a relaxed smile are what make these portraits feel special. Simple hairstyles tend to photograph best and beautifully complement the timeless, classic feel of school portraits.
A FEW HELPFUL DON'TS...
When choosing outfits, try to skip large logos, busy patterns, and graphics (such as the Nike Swoosh or a huge Bluey face). While they may be favorites in everyday life, they can pull attention away from little faces.
It’s also best to avoid super bright or neon colors. These shades can reflect onto the skin and create unusual highlights or shadows in photos. Try to choose softer tones that keep the focus right where it belongs.
