One of the most common questions I get before a family session is, “What should we wear?” And I get it! You want to look good, feel comfortable, and still have your photos feel like you.

The best outfits aren’t about matching perfectly or dressing in something fancy. They’re about being confident, relaxed, and connected. When you’re comfortable, it shows, and that’s what makes your photos feel real and natural instead of posed and stiff.

Start with a vibe, not just colors

Think about the feeling you want for your session: cozy at home, playful outdoors, or soft and simple in a field. Once you nail that down, colors fall into place. Neutrals, earth tones, and soft shades photograph beautifully and let your family’s personality shine. If you’re wanting something bolder and punchier (because maybe that’s your family’s personality), pick something with a pop of color (jewelry is a great way to do this!)

Coordinate, don’t match

Forget everyone wearing the exact same outfit. Choose 2–3 colors that complement each other and mix textures and subtle patterns. A flowy dress next to linen, denim, or knit layers creates depth and movement while keeping things relaxed. I usually suggest that only one person have a print (maybe a flowery dress on Mom), and everyone else coordinate based on the colors within that print.

Comfort comes first

If you’re tugging at clothes or worrying about stains, you won’t be able to relax and enjoy your session, and this can definitely show up in a photo. If you feel uncomfortable, chances are, you will look uncomfortable, too. Pick outfits that let you move, hug your kids, and even run around a bit. Bare feet or rolled sleeves can add a natural, relaxed feel.

Add personal touches

A favorite hat, a quilt from a grandparent, the watch you wore on your wedding day, something that you really love can give your photos that unique and meaningful feel. These small details help tell your family’s story, they add depth and meaning to your session, it really does matter and make a difference!
